BANGALORE: Prestige Group, the developers of UB City, a commercial complex coming up on Vittal Mallya Road, removed on Tuesday the portion of the forecourt that had reportedly encroached on the road.

The developer carried out the activity in the presence of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) engineers. "We have acted according to the instructions of the BBMP authorities," said Nayeem Noor, vice-president (Public Relations), Prestige Group, who was supervising the activity.

The action of the developer comes a day after the in-charge Engineer-in-Chief of BBMP L. Satyanarayana assured Lokayukta N. Santosh Hegde that the encroachment would be cleared.

Mr. Hegde had sought an explanation from Mr. Satyanarayana after he read reports of residents alleging that the paved forecourt of the complex had encroached three metres onto the road, thus reducing the road width.

On Monday, Mr. Satyanarayana met Mr. Hegde and intimated the latter about the steps that the BBMP would take to remove the encroached portion.

He agreed to produce documents, including those related to title and the sanctioned plan.

Mr. Satyanarayana told The Hindu on Tuesday that the developer removed the encroachment fearing action from the BBMP. The debris would be removed by the BBMP, he said.

Mr. Noor said they had not encroached upon the road, but only paved the dilapidated pavement along the compound wall of the UB property for the benefit of the local residents. "We will remove the constructed part and leave the maintenance of the footpath to the BBMP," Mr. Noor said.
