THIRUVANANTHAPURAM : The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) has demanded that the Government take action against those who are carrying out tourist activities in encroached land in the Nayyar dam area under the guise of spirituality. A press note issued by the DYFI here on Tuesday said allegations were made against the Sivanda Ashramam that it had encroached upon Government land and that it was carrying out tourism-related activities at Neyyar dam. According to DYFI national president P. Sivaramakrishnan, the ashramam carried out unauthorised constructions in about 16.18 hectares of encroached land near the dam. The ashramam had been accused of unauthorised use of water from the dam and electricity. Under the guise of spiritual activities, the ashramam authorities were bringing lots of foreign nationals to the Neyyar dam area without submitting timely reports about such foreigners to the authorities concerned, the press note alleged. This land at Neyyar dam should also be reclaimed as part of the ongoing anti-encroachment drive. The DYFI will organise agitations to press for an inquiry into the alleged encro- achment at Neyyar dam.
