dated May 24, 1957: Stop nuclear tests

The Lok Sabha on May 22 unanimously adopted a resolution calling on the US, the Soviet Union and Britain to suspend immediately their programmes for nuclear test explosions, pending agreement on their discontinuance and abandonment of the production and stockpiling of such weapons. The resolution, sponsored by the Defence Minister, Mr. V.K. Krishna Menon, urged that if any or all the three Big Powers could take the initiative and suspend the test explosions, it would be a substantial contribution to rid the world of the fear which had led to the present armaments race and open the way towards disarmament and international co-operation and peace. "The destructive capacity of the nuclear bomb has been established beyond doubt and it is clear that it can destroy the planet we live in. Why then should anyone want to gain more knowledge of its destructive capacity by continued tests?"
