Raichur: The Regional Transport Office here will launch a road safety campaign on Thursday to create awareness among the public on road safety measures and safe driving. The office in cooperation with the Transport and the Police departments will take up the campaign in all rural areas covering the limits of most of the police stations in the district. In a release here on Tuesday, Shivaraj B. Patil, Regional Transport Officer, said that road accidents have been on the rise in the past few years owing to careless driving, defective curves and the lack of awareness on road safety measures among road users. On an average, three or four people were killed every day in the district in road accidents. He said that 740 road accident cases were reported in the past one year in the district in which 215 people were killed. More than 1,465 persons were injured. There was a need to create awareness among the public, the rural people in particular, about the safety measures and safe driving. He said the office has been taking action such as cancelling driving licenses of those drivers whose vehicles were involved in accidents. If such drivers were the employees of the Transport Department or any government department, the office recommended to the authorities concerned to initiate action against the drivers. Last year, the office cancelled 42 driving licenses. It also registered cases against 48 others involved in road accidents, he said.
