No encroachment of varsity land: CPI(M)

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: CPI(M) State secretary Pinarayi Vijayan has described as ``baseless'' the allegation that the AKG Centre had encroached upon land owned by the University of Kerala.

Mr. Vijayan told a news conference here on Wednesday that the United Democratic Front (UDF) leaders had come up with the allegation only to cover up their sense of shame following detection of large-scale encroachment of Government land in Munnar by them and their relatives. The AKG Centre had not indulged in land grab. The CPI(M) leadership had presented all the facts of the case before the people when similar allegations were raised in the past.

The AKG Memorial Committee was allotted 34.408 cents of land through Government orders issued on August 20, 1977, and August 25, 1977. The committee later applied to the University of Kerala for 15 cents of land and the senate meeting held on July 6 and 7, 1978, decided to allot the land free-of-cost to the committee. The land was sanctioned through a gift deed executed on February 27, 1980. The AKG Centre is located in the land allotted thus. The allegation that the centre grabbed land belonging to the university was me ant only to defame the party.

It was the university that built the wall separating its land and the land on which the AKG Centre was located. The university engineer and the AKG Memorial Committee members held a meeting at the university office on February 10, 1986, and took the decision that the university should build the wall.
