Imparting skills in rescue operations

A newly inaugurated centre will train local youth in various rescue measures in water and land.

Retired Navy personnel K.V. Ashokan is on a mission to create awareness of life-saving measures to be taken by people involved in rescue operations during accidents and disasters.

His `Jeevan Raksha Training Centre' at Parassinikkadavu here is the fulfilment of a longstanding wish to set up a mechanism to train local youth in various rescue measures to be adopted in response to emergency situations in water or on land. As an ex-serviceman who retired from the Navy as Marine Commando, Mr. Ashokan knows about the importance of learning ways to handle rescue operation in an emergency situation.

The training institute, which was inaugurated at Parassinikkadavu here on Wednesday, is not meant to be a commercial institute where the trainees should pay fixed fee for undergoing the training, he says adding that he just wants to share his knowledge and experience acquired during his 15-year service in the Navy. Mr. Ashokan says he will be satisfied with `dakshina' (a reward to a trainer) from his students. After retiring from service in the Navy, he has been working as a trainer in life-saving technique courses at the National Institute of Water Sports in Goa, controlled by the Indian Institute of Tourism Management. Mr. Ashokan says the majority of people do not know how to respond to an emergency. The lack of knowledge among rescuers will only worsen the situation, he says. Very few people know even the basic first aid measures to be administered to victims of injuries in accidents.

The training programme will include rigorous coaching rescue operation in water and on land, he says.

He is also planning to train trainers as part of his mission. Details can be had on phone 9249722549.
