KOCHI: The Indian consulate is in constant interaction with various Government agencies to ensure safety and welfare of expatriate Indian communities, said Venu Rajamony, Consul-General of India in Dubai. Addressing mediapersons here on Wednesday, he said the Kerala Police had posted a nodal officer to check human trafficking. He said the consulate had asked the State Government to ensure that women going abroad by themselves gave their visa details to the Non-Resident Keralites' Affairs Department (NoRKA). This information could be sent to the Consulate-General to verify the authenticity of the sponsors so as to bring down incidents of exploitation of women, Mr. Rajamony said. Shelters have been formed with the assistance of Indian Community Welfare Community (ICWC) to provide immediate rehabilitation and medical care, if needed, to women who approach the Consulate for help. The nodal officer of Kerala Police will collect statements from the women concerned on their return, so as to follow up investigation on the recruiting agent. Monthly meetings will be held between representatives of the Department of Labour, United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the Consulate to sort out labour issues of Indian immigrants. The Consulate is creating a pool of volunteers from Indian communities to visit labour camps, prisons and hospitals to provide assistance to Indians there, he said. Weekly counselling service with hotline has been set up to provide professionally-trained assistance to those in distress.
