Lakshmi settles for a draw

Principal Correspondent

HYDERABAD: Asian under-16 champion and strong contender P. Lakshmi Sahiti (AP) settled for a draw on the second board with second-seeded Kiran Monisha Mohanty (Orissa) in the fourth round of the 34th National `B' women's chess championship here on Wednesday.

Lakshmi, desperate to clinch a crucial win, was disappointed at the way things turned out against Mohanty in a game which began in Sicilian Defence and never really rose to the expected standards, and ended in a draw after 20 moves following a repetition of moves.

On the top board, top-seeded Padmini Rout of Orissa continued her winning march after a surprisingly long battle against R. Preethi of Tamil Nadu in Sicilian Defence. After the overall equality in the beginning, Padmini got a slight edge in the middle-game which she converted into victory. "There was nothing special in the game and the opponent too did not make any glaring mistakes. I had to really wait for the right moves to slowly gain ascendancy," remarked Padmini after the 80-move game.
