VIENNA: Top seeds Nikolay Davydenko and Andy Roddick continued their impressive starts to the ATP tournament in Poertschach on Wednesday with both enjoying comfortable second round wins. Roddick, the American World No. 3 and tournament second seed, disposed of Denmark's Kristian Pless 6-4, 6-3 while Davydenko beat Ecuador's Nicolas Lapentti 6-4, 6-2. There was no such joy for Croatian third seed Ivan Ljubicic, who crashed out 7-6(5), 6-4 in his second round encounter against Peru's Luis Horna.
Sania & Chan win
Top seeds Sania Mirza and her Taiwanese partner Yung-Jan Chan sailed into the quarterfinals of the doubles draw at the Istanbul Cup with an easy 6-3, 6-1 win over the Romanian pair of Sorana Cirstea and Agnes Szatmari in Turkey on Tuesday. Sania and Yung-Jan were broken twice in the first set but more than made up for that with four breaks of their own in the opening set. The Indo-Taiwanese combination put up an even better display in the next set, breaking the Romanians twice to clinch the match. In singles play, Venus Williams' preparations for Roland Garros were disrupted on Wednesday when she lost 6-4, 6-4 in the second round to Aravane Rezai. Rezai will now face Sania's conqueror Meghann Shaughnessy, who also moved into the last eight defeating Ekaterina Afinogenova 6-1, 6-3. Also, Patty Schnyder advanced to the quarterfinals, beating Vania King 6-4, 6-1.
