Corrections and Clarifications

A report "Panel on senior citizen health insurance" ("Business" page, May 23, 2007) stated that the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) has announced the constitution of a committee to go into issues connected with health insurance for senior citizens and is headed by V. Hariharan, former President, Sundaram Fasteners. It was an error. Mr. K.S. Sastry, former chairman, National Housing Bank is the chairman.

The first paragraph in a report "Wage board set up for journalists" (May 22, 2007, page 1) was: "The Government has appointed K. Narayana Kurup, retired judge of the Kerala High Court, chairperson of the two wages boards for working and non-working journalists." A reader points out that the correct expression would have been "... of the two wage boards for working journalists and non-journalist employees of newspapers and news agencies." The title of the statute governing the service conditions in the newspaper industry is: The Working Journalists and Other Newspaper Employees (Conditions of Service) and Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 1955.

A reader disputed a report "Man sucked in by copter" (Delhi, May 22, 2007, page 5), which stated that a person was killed when he got sucked in by the blades of a helicopter as it was taking off. The reader said the rotors exert downward pressure and do not suck in objects. The clarification, based on information released by the police, is that the boy, instead of moving away, ran towards the helicopter and his head was sliced off. The helicopter company did not employ trained and technical staff and had been using local boys to direct the crew. The helicopter was not operating from a certified helipad but from a narrow strip. So the boy had no place to move or run. The deputy general manager (technical) of a helicopter company agrees that the main rotor exerts downward pressure. The tail rotor, especially in older generation helicopters, and which is sometimes just four feet off the ground, can hit a person standing nearby.
