HASSAN: Public Works and Energy Minister H.D. Revanna made it clear that the Suvarna Gramodaya scheme will not be entrusted to private agencies and instead it would be developed through the zilla panchayats. The prestigious project would be launched on June 1, he told presspersons here on Wednesday. In Hassan district, 102 villages have been selected and Rs. 3 crore would be spent for various development works over three years, he said and added that Rs. 1 crore would be spent a year. Mr. Revanna said that he had directed the Irrigation Department officials to see to it that all field channels and main canals are strengthened. Steps would be taken to remove silt from canals so that water could be released into them from July 15, he said. A sum of Rs. 16.5 crore had been released to tackle drinking water scarcity in villages in the district and of this, Rs 15.8 crore had been spent so far, Mr. Revanna said. Mr. Revanna said that in seepage-affected areas, land in the upper reaches is being acquired through without notification. In one instance in Holenarsipur taluk, the government lawyer in alleged collusion with the Land Acquisition Officer acquired land for Rs. 50 lakh. When the cost was so high, it was the duty of the lawyer to file an appeal in court. He did not do so. "I have asked the Deputy Commissioner to send a report to the Law and Revenue departments so that action could be taken against the lawyer and Land Acquisition Officer," he said. Mr. Revanna distributed sites to 66 families in the S.M. Krishna Layout in the city.
