HASSAN: Minister for Public Works and Energy H.D. Revanna said here on Wednesday that a proposal had been sent to NABARD seeking Rs. 325 crore for the development of roads in the State and also another proposal for Rs. 500 crore for the construction of high schools and first grade colleges. The State had utilised Rs. 825 crore assistance from NABARD in the last three years, he said. Mr. Revanna, who reviewed development works at the Deputy Commissioner's office, told presspersons that Rs. 1 crore each would be spent on the construction of 104 government first grade colleges being set up from this year. Temporary accommodation is being arranged for all new colleges in the State as the buildings would be completed by the end of December, he added. Students who have passed the pre-university examination would be admitted in the degree colleges, Mr. Revanna said and added that he had directed Deputy Director for Collegiate Education to see to it that all students who have passed the SSLC and pre-university examinations got admission to pre-university and degree colleges. He said he would sanction additional colleges if needed.
Teachers
Mr. Revanna said that with the setting up of new high schools, there will be a need for 12,500 teachers in the next three years. This year, 2,500 teachers would be recruited and the Government has written to the Finance Department for allocation of funds. Similarly, 1,800 lecturers required for 104 new pre-university and degree colleges will be recruited.
Food poisoning
On the death of two people in Madihalli village in Holenarsipur taluk recently, Mr. Revanna said in all, 80 people fell ill after eating food prepared at a marriage function. However, doctors saved 78 of them. He made it clear that this was not due to contaminated water but food poisoning only. The two deaths were mainly because of the delay in taking the victims to hospital. Mr. Revanna complimented the doctors and their team for the good work. Mr. Revanna said that in all 23,000 houses would be built in the district under the Ashraya Housing Scheme. Of these, 19,000 have been completed. "I have directed the zilla panchayat to complete work on the remaining houses before June 30," he said and added that the houses should be registered in the names of the beneficiaries. He said that he had directed the tahsildars to complete identifying the beneficiaries for the old age pension and widow pension schemes. They should be issued pension before May 31, he said. He would tour the taluks in the first week of June and "if I receive any complaint, then I will take action against the tahsildars concerned," he said. Mr. Revanna said the district had 29,000 physically challenged persons and he had directed gram panchayats to conduct a survey on their requirements besides enlightening them on the facilities available for their rehabilitation.
