Collector allays fears over storing treated drainage water

Special Correspondent

Says doubts over water sources getting contaminated unfounded

VILLUPURAM: District Collector Brajendra Navnit has defended the proposal to store the treated drainage water in the Ka.Kuppam and Erumananthangal lakes. The fears of the residents that these water sources would get contaminated are unfounded.

The treated drainage water would be free from any harmful bacteria and would be highly suitable for irrigation. In a statement here, Mr. Navnit stated that the Villupuram Municipality had proposed to implement the underground drainage project.

On an average, the municipality was generating 12.5 million litres of drainage water a day and as part of the underground drainage project it would be treated in a plant to be set up at a cost of Rs. 28.62 crore.

Later, the treated water would be drained into the Ka.Kuppam and Erumananthangal lakes.

He called upon the people not to give credence to the false propaganda being carried out in certain quarters, misleading the people that storage of drainage water would affect the deep borewells, farm wells and other water sources in the vicinity.

Scientifically treated

Mr. Navnit underscored the point that only the scientifically treated drainage water would be stored in both the lakes, and hence, these sources would facilitate round-the-year irrigation. Moreover, these would also help in recharging the groundwater sources.

Mr. Navnit stated that further clarifications could be obtained from the Executive Engineer of the Tamil Nadu Water and Drainage Board.

The residents had staged a road-roko recently near these lakes against the storage proposal.
