Top seeds knocked out

BANGALORE: The top seeds in the under-14 boys' and girls' singles were knocked out from the Kinesis Wilson AITA Talent Series junior tennis championship at the Kineiss courts here on Wednesday.

In the boys' singles, S. Siddarth battled it out for over two hours to humble the top seed Varun Satyanarayan 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-2 and entered the semifinals. Varun, however, avenged his defeat in the under-16 singles, when he beat Siddarth 6-4,6-2 and made the semifinals.

Arvind Vibhute of Gulbarga stormed into the under-16 singles last four with a 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(5) win over Raghavendra.

In the girls' section, the 10-year-old top seed, Dhruti Venugopal from Mysore, went down to Shruti Ashok 1-6, 3-6 in the under-14 singles quarterfinals. Dhruti, however, entered the under-16 singles semifinals beating S.G. Abhinaya 7-6(8), 6-0.

Preethi Gokhale knocked out the second seed S.P. Ritu 6-4, 6-4 and made the last four round.

The results (all quarterfinals): Boys: Under-16, singles: Vishnu Jinan bt V. Aditya (TN) 6-3, 6-2; Arvind Vibhute bt Raghavendra 6-3, 2-6, 7-6(5); Varun Satyanarayan bt S. Siddharth 6-4, 6-2; V. Senthil Kumar (TN) bt G.L. Karthik 6-0, 6-3.

U-14, singles: S. Siddarth bt Varun Satyanarayan 7-6(5), 5-7, 6-2; Chirag Mandal bt Sumukha Karanth 6-3, 6-3; Raghavendra bt V. Aditya (TN) 7-6(0), 6-7(4), 6-0; Rahul Adhikari bt Nikhil Reddy 1-6, 6-0, 7-5.

Girls: U-14, singles: Shruti Ashok bt Dhruti Venugopal 6-1, 6-3; Preeti Ujjani bt Swathi Kumar 6-4, 6-2; Preeti Gokhale bt S.G. Abhinaya 6-2, 6-0; S.P. Ritu bt Nikita Telkar 6-1, 7-6 (2).

U-16, singles: Preeti Gokhale bt S.P. Ritu 6-4, 6-4; Rachita Sarda bt Swathi Kumar 6-1, 6-1; Dhruti Venugopal bt S.G. Abhinaya 7-6(8), 6-0.
