Last lions

This refers to the editorial "Asia's last lions" (May 15). Gir lions have always been in the radar of professional poachers. The proposal to create a second free-ranging population brings some hope of saving the species. But adequate vigilance to curb poaching is imperative to pull them out of the jaws of extinction.

Megha Agarwal,
Cuttack

The death of 18 lions in the Gir Sanctuary is a matter of great concern. Unless we have stringent policies in place for the protection of endangered species, they will go extinct. The day is not far when the young will need to take the aid of photographs and videos to see what lions looked like.

Kamlesh Shakta,
New Delhi
