Teachers not happy with knowledge panel proposals

Suggestion for high-level body in place of UGC opposed BJP promises a clean, efficient and secular Government

HUBLI: The Federation of University and College Teachers of Karnataka has taken exception to several recommendations of the National Knowledge Commission.

Delivering a lecture during a seminar on "Report of National Knowledge Commission" organised by Karnatak University College Teachers Association here on Wednesday, federation president A.M. Narahari expressed concern over several recommendations.

The commission headed by Sam Pitroda had submitted its report to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, and it had proposed setting up of another high- level body in place of the University Grants Commission in order to permit private and foreign companies establish universities. The federation was opposed to this proposal, he said.

Privatisation of higher education would result in complete commercialisation of the sector, and it would mean higher fee structure. It would also lead to conversion of land belonging to educational institutions for commercial purposes, Prof. Narahari said.

The federation was opposed to the proposals to give the power of evaluation of colleges to private associations, performance-based salary and reducing the status of institutions such as AICTE, MCI and Bar Council to just professional organisations.

Prof. Narahari emphasised the need to hold an elaborate discussion in Parliament on the issues.

He added that the federation welcomed some of the recommendations including earmarking of six per cent of the Gross Domestic Product for education, increasing the number of universities, and providing education to all sections of society.
