Weavers promised help by officials

T. Madhavan

CHENNAI : Officials of the Handlooms and Textiles department and Handloom Export Promotion Council (HEPC) visited Anakaputhur centre of the Kancheepuram Cooperative Intensive Handloom Development Project on Tuesday and promised help to the weavers.

HEPC executive director G. Mathi Vathanan urged the weavers to go for changes in design and textile patterns to tap the export market. Listing the initiatives of the Council, he said it sought to revive handlooms through several projects in the southern districts.

It would extend support to weavers who wanted to explore the opportunities available in the export markets, he said.

Joint Director-Handlooms K. Karnan said the department would provide training to weavers to adopt new technologies and produce more designs and varieties. He underlined the need for the weavers to keep customers' preferences in mind. This would improve their earnings and help expand the market.

He said officials of the Handlooms department in Kancheepuram district would meet the weavers shortly to work out the modalities of reviving the handloom sector in Anakaputhur.

The Joint Director of Handlooms in Kancheepuram R. Mohankumar said the department would provide assistance to the weavers to modernise handloom units by helping them get funds from banks and financial institutions.

Handloom exporter Rajendran briefed the weavers about export quality fibres. The weavers said they were ready to take up the challenge of tapping the export market by producing quality products and appealed to the government agencies to provide the necessary help in terms of financial assistance and technical expertise.
