BANGALORE: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has completed preliminary investigation into the alleged irregularities in the conduct of the postgraduate common entrance test PGCET-2006 for medical courses and filed a first information report (FIR) against 30 persons.

The FIR names, among others, Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore, P.S. Prabhakara, who is also Professor and Director of Post-Graduate Studies, Nargund College of Pharmacy in Bangalore, I.A. Hukkeri, Registrar of RGUHS, and scores of others.

The FIR was filed before the special designated court for CBI cases (CCH 4) and apart from naming Mr. Prabhakara and Mr. Hukkeri, it says several other officials of RGUHS, including Assistant Registrars, a Field officer, Director of a private education institution and several students were involved in the scam.

The State had on January 17, 2006 referred the case to the CBI for investigation.

In the FIR, the investigating agency has traced the role of the officials and the students in the fraud and also brought out how the question papers relating to the common entrance test for postgraduate medical courses during 2006 were leaked.

It says the events leading to the test have been thoroughly scanned from December 2005 to February 2006 and cases registered against the officials and others mainly under the Prevention of Corruption Act.

The CBI says the investigation officer in the case was Padma Kumar, who is working as a Deputy Superintendent of Police, Anti-Corruption Squad, while the FIR was filed by CBI Superintendent of Police Narasimha Kumar.

The CBI claims that several students had direct access to some officials of the RGUHS and that they had managed to obtain the question paper much before the conduct of the examination.
