S. Railway in quarterfinals

Kovilpatti: By scorning three goals in five minutes in the second session, Southern Railway (Chennai) defeated Madurai District Hockey Association 3-0 and entered the quarterfinals of the second annual K.N. Subbaraj Memorial Trophy all-India hockey tournament at the GK Stadium here on Wednesday.

After a barren first half, in which Madurai could have taken the lead but for Karthik missing two easy chances, Southern Railway attacked strongly in the second session with its forwards Karthik, Arumugam, Mahender Singh and Divakar combining well.

The Madurai defence came under heavy pressure. Karthik opened the account in the 54th minute off a Divakar pass. Arumugam scored the second off another Divakar pass in the 58th minute and Mahendra Singh completed the tally in the 59th minute off a pass from Arumugam.

In another match, Sarath Babu's goal helped Integral Coach Factory (Chennai) defeat Karnataka State Police 1-0 and enter the quarterfinals.

Sarath scored off a cross from Rajendra Prasad from the right in the 43rd minute.

TNSP in last eight

At Kayalpatnam, Tamil Nadu Special Police (Chennai) entered the quarterfinals of the 42nd Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Memorial Trophy all-India football tournament defeating defending champion Madras Engineering Group and Centre (Bangalore) 2-0 at the USC ground on Wednesday.

Bharath Kinsley put TNSP in the lead in the sixth minute by volleying a lob from Rajkumar and Tajudeen scored off a defensive lapse a minute from the final whistle.

Nandakumar hits 119

T. Nandakumar's 119 enabled Wonder XI CC post a 61-run win over Mechanics CC in the TNCA-NDCA `B' division league for the Murali Babu Rolling Trophy at the Cordite Factory grounds in Coimbatore recently.

The scores:

B division: Don Bradman's CC 189 (Abbas 41, Vinod Kumar 40, P. Vinodh four for 27) lost to Wellington CC 190 for eight in 29.5 overs (Nantharam 53, Kamal Dev 40, L. Vimal four for eight).

Wonder XI CC 219 for eight in 40 overs (T. Nandakumar 119) bt Mechanics CC 158 (D. Naveen Kumar four for 40).

Pandalur Taluk SC 148 (A. Mohammed 40) lost to Cordite Factory SC 149 for seven in 35.3 overs.

Kotagiri SA 155 lost to Wonder XI 157 for four in 26.2 overs (T. Nandakumar 68, C. Babulal 55).

Talent series

Pro Serve Tennis Academy will conduct the Pro Serve Talent series championship at the CDTA and Cosmopolitan tennis courts here from June 9 to 15.
