THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Cabinet on Wednesday decided to give three days' notice to encroachers in various districts before the authorities demolish illegal structures. Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan told mediapersons after a Cabinet meeting that this was to allow time to the encroachers to retrieve movable properties and vacate the premises. Strict instructions had been issued to Collectors of all districts to grant reasonable time to encroachers before evictions. Referring to action against encroachers from Thiruvananthapuram to Kasaragod and some organisations resorting to direct action for eviction of some alleged encroachers, the Chief Minister said the public would not be allowed to take the law into their hands. Mr. Achuthanandan said the police would conduct detailed inquiries against police, revenue, registration and forest officials and encroachers who collaborated in encroaching upon government land. Many officials had amassed wealth. Some of them had already been transferred. He said those who alleged the existence of a `media syndicate' in the capital was now relying on the media syndicate to leak out discussions in Left Democratic Front (LDF) State committee meetings. This was how the controversy over the discussions in the LDF about the team deputed by the Government to Munnar for evictions and demolitions arose. Televisions channels had flashed news about the discussions even while the LDF State committee was in session.
