STAMP OF SAVOUR: D. Satya Buddhu displaying his latest collection Photo: C.V. Subrahmanyam
VISAKHAPATNAM: The department of Posts released an attractive set of six stamps to commemorate 2,550 years of Mahaparinirvana of Lord Gautama Buddha. A noted stamp collector and numismatist D. Satya Buddhu collected the set of stamps. Each stamp worth Rs.5 is available on a sheet of paper with perforations and could be used separately.
Enlightenment
Buddha at the age of 80 had announced that he would enter Parinirvana, or the final deathless state, abandoning the earthly body and attaining freedom from the cycle of birth and rebirth. Buddha attained His Mahaparinirvana on the full moon in the month of Vaisakha, a day which also marked his birth and attainment of Gnana (or enlightenment). The set of stamps printed by the Indian Security Press in Nashik in the photogravure process is not only attractive but also a must with stamp collectors and those interested in Buddha and Buddhism. The stamp was released on May 2.
