Hearing in plea against helmets posted for May 29
Special Correspondent
CHENNAI:
The Government Pleader on Tuesday took notice of a petition filed by a city resident challenging a Government Order making it compulsory for two-wheeler riders and pillion riders to wear helmets from June 1.
A Division Bench, comprising Justices M. Jeyapaul and P.R. Shivakumar, admitting the petition posted the matter for May 29.
In her petition, J.S.N. Nimmu Vasanth of Kotturpuram here, said she had been advised by legal luminaries and medical experts such as neurologists that the impugned order was violative of the fundamental rights guaranteed under the Constitution and also on medical grounds.
She sought an interim stay of the Government Order. She also sought quashing of the order which she said was "arbitrary, illegal and against the principles of natural justice."
