Two persons killed

PERAMBALUR : Two persons were killed on the spot when the car in which they were travelling from Dindigul to Neyveli collided with a lorry at Thuraimangalam near here on Wednesday. The police identified the dead as S. Vellaisamy (52), Cuddalore district president of the Moovendar Munnetra Kazhagam, and his mother, S. Parvathy.

Work inspected

Thanjavur : Collector C. Vijayaraj Kumar on Wednesday inspected the ongoing and completed desilting works taken up by the Public Works Department in the Cauvery division of Thanjavur district. The works were Korai drainage channel in Thanjavur taluk and Serumakkanallur, Regunathapuram, Pandaravadai, Umbalapadi, drainage canals in Papanasam taluk, Thimmakudi, Asur, Karupur, Nallur, Manniyar canals in Kumbakonam taluk.

Appointed

Thanjavur : N. Mohandoss, Nephrologist and Head of the Department of Nephrology, Thanjavur Medical College, has been appointed member of the Medical Tamil Development Committee of M.G.R.Medical University for one year.

A press release issued here said his suggestions for preparing medical books in Tamil would be considered. Committee chairman would be K. Mustafa Hussain, Vice-Chancellor, of Dr. M.G.R.Medical University. Other members would be Avvai Nadarajan, Erode Thamizhanban, Manavai Mustafa, C.P.Seran, M.Logamanian, S.Gopinathan, K.Logamuthukrishnan, Sudha Seshaiyan, Rajalakshmi and Registrar, Education officer and Finance Officer of the university. — Special Correspondent

Mettur level

TIRUCHI : The level in the Mettur dam stood at 74.87 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Wednesday. The inflow was 1,240 cusecs and the discharge from the dam was 1,500 cusecs. — Special Correspondent

Woman immolates herself

Nagercoil: A woman committed suicide by setting herself ablaze on Wednesday.

According to police, Shylaja (25) of Mulacumoodu near Thuckalay took the extreme step following her mother's outburst for not attending computer classes.

Man ends life

Nagercoil: A man committed suicide by consuming poison on Wednesday.

According to sources, Sukumaran (57) of Andarkulam near Suchindrum ended his life owing to acute stomach pain.

CDs on tourism spots

MADURAI: Pebbles Infotainment, a company that deals with multimedia education and infotainment, has brought out two compact discs on Tamil Nadu tourism and temples in the State.

Each CD is priced at Rs.149.

The CDs are playable in VCD, DVD players and in personal computers.

Murdered

SALEM: A youth was reportedly murdered at Kondalampatti near here on Tuesday.

Police said Balu (22) of Arasamarathu Kattur and his friend Venkatesh (19) entered into an argument with a group of persons.

It was said that the group allegedly stabbed Balu to death.

They also assaulted Venkatesh.

Residents in the area rescued him and admitted him in Salem Government Medical College Hospital.

A case has been registered and further investigation is on.

Seized

SALEM: Police seized 17 kg of sandalwood logs and arrested a person for smuggling the logs in New Integrated Bus stand here on Tuesday.

Police said that the personnel enquired a person moving under suspicious circumstances.

They found him carrying sandalwood logs.

They arrested Venkatachalam (44) of Thalavaipatti in Attur.

In the preliminary inquiry, it was revealed that he tried to smuggle the logs to Andhra Pradesh.

Killed

SALEM: A 50-year-old-man was killed when he accidentally fell from a bus at Edaipadi near here on Tuesday.

Police said Ammasi of Pullagoundampatti was travelling in the bus proceeding to Bhavani when the accident took place. He was admitted to the Komarapalayam Government Hospital but died. Thevur police registered a case.

Demonstration

SALEM: Members of the Salem urban unit of Pattali Makkal Katchi staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Wednesday urging the Union Government to control the price of cement.

Disciplinary action fully cancelled

CHENNAI: The State Government on Monday fully cancelled the disciplinary action taken against employees of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, Villupuram division, for striking work in 2001 demanding bonus. Orders in this regard were given to the employees by the Transport Minister, K.N.Nehru, here.

The Government's decision, which followed representations to the Transport Minister, will benefit 148 employees whose increment had been deferred, eight for whom salary was reduced and five who were placed under suspension, according to a press release. — Special Correspondent

Uneasy calm prevails at Serukadai

Nagercoil: Uneasy calm prevailed at Serukadai near Padmanabhapuram after a group clash on Tuesday night.

According to police sources, two groups attacked each other with aruvals (sickles). Four persons sustained cut injuries and they were admitted to Government hospital. The police have registered cases against 22 persons. — Staff Reporter

MBA, MCA entrance test on May 26, 27

MADURAI: The entrance examination for admission to MBA, MCA, ME, M.Arch. and M. Plan courses will be held at various centres in the city on May 26 and 27. The Anna University-Chennai is conducting the examination.

V. Abhaikumar, Principal of Thiagarajar College of Engineering, who is the coordinator of the examination, said in a release here that TANCET-2007 would be held at eight centres.

He said the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation would ply `entrance test specials' on both the days for the convenience of candidates. — Staff Reporter

Prem Kumar's dismissal hailed

CHENNAI: The Janata Party on Wednesday welcomed the State Government's action of dismissing former Superintendent of Police K. Prem Kumar from the service.

MSP for paddy inadequate: farmers

NAGAPATTINAM: Farmers in the Cauvery Delta region have expressed disappointment over the minimum support price (MSP) for paddy announced by the Centre for the kharif season 2007-08 and urged Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi to prevail upon the Centre and hike the price.

Arupathy Kalyanam, general secretary of the Federation of Farmers Associations in Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts, told The Hindu on Wednesday that the Centre had been showing "partisan" attitude for paddy and wheat farmers for the past three decades.

Lightning kills two persons

HOSUR: Two persons were killed when lightning struck them at Bagalur near here on Wednesday. Police said Santharaj (35) and his brother Rajesh (18) of Kajalpet were taking shelter under a tree when the incident occurred. — Staff Reporter
