Anti-encroachment drive continues

Staff Reporter

Demolition taken up in 34 cases in Kannur

KANNUR: Taluk and district-level Special Task Forces (STF) continued their drive against encroachments on the third day of the operation on Wednesday by dismantling encroached portions in 34 cases in different parts of the district.

Revenue officials assisted by Water Resources Department officials began a survey of the land of a tourist resort located on the Kattampally river bank here. If any encroachment was found in the survey, the STF would take action on Thursday, the officials said.

In another drive against encroachments in the Kannur taluk, over 150 shops that were found to have encroached on Public Works Department (PWD) road were served notice by the STF. Encroached areas would be cleared on Thursday if the traders did not remove the structures on their own, the officials said.

The STF would crack down on encroachments in the Kannur town on Thursday. The teams received nearly 25 complaints from the public, the officials said. In the Taliparamba taluk, the STF dismantled 11 roadside kiosks that had encroached on PWD roads. Eight more kiosks were served notice, they said.

In the Thalassery taluk, 23 shops voluntarily dismantled encroached parts. Encroached portions of 12 buildings at Peringalam and of two shops at Kurichiyil were also removed by the STF.

At Thalassery, nine shops found to have encroached on PWD road were evicted.

Government land

Staff Reporter adds from Kozhikode:

The special task force constituted for the purpose of evicting encroachers recovered 2.09 acres of Government land in the district on Wednesday.

Revenue officials recovered 1.11 acres of land at Thurayur village and 98 cents of land at Kallai in the limits of the City Corporation.

Meanwhile, the timber merchants observed a hartal at Kallai on Wednesday.

The hartal was called against the decision of the officials to evict timber merchants without checking the title deeds and other documents.

Timber Merchants' Association general convener P.M. unhayin Koya demanded that the Government stop demolishing the legal structures constructed by the merchants for timber business. Timber merchants had not encroached upon the riverbanks but had only installed the legs of the cranes in the river.

The Revenue officials who started the eviction drive from Saturday had recovered 2.2 acres of land from three individuals in Avikkal area in Thikkodi in the district on Tuesday.

Notices had been also served on eight persons asking them to vacate from the encroached Government lands in Kasaba village.

A survey for determining the extent of encroachment in Chappa beach seashore had started, officials said.
