Three killed, DSP injured in Kashmir

JAMMU: Three persons were killed and three others, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police, injured in separate incidents in Jammu and Kashmir. Five militant hideouts were smashed and arms and ammunition recovered, officials said on Wednesday.

DSP Yougal Manhas and his driver were seriously wounded when a militant opened fire on their vehicle in which they were travelling in Mendhar town of Poonch district today, a police spokesman said. Both of them were airlifted to the Government Medical College Hospital here for specialised treatment. The police and the Army had launched search operation in the area to nab the militant responsible for the attack. Mr. Manhas was instrumental in neutralising a number of hardcore militants in Mendhar area, the spokesman said.

The police said a boy was killed and another injured in a landmine blast in the frontier district of Kathua. Some boys were collecting exploded mortar shells to extract copper from them in firing range in Hiranagar belt. Two boys picked up a live mortar shell and started fiddling with it. The shell exploded killing Deepak Mangal Singh on the spot and injuring his brother Neeraj Singh critically. He was shifted to a hospital.

A partially decomposed body of a civilian, Mohammad Ashraf, was recovered by the police from the forest area of Kund Bara Lancha in Reasi district on Tuesday, officials said. The body was probably concealed by militants in the forests. — PTI
