MWG organisers unveil plans

Special Correpondent

HYDERABAD: If the best generals sleep soundly before the night of battle, it means their plans for the next day are well laid out.

The Military World Games (MWG) at Hyderabad and Mumbai may be many months away. Going by the level of preparedness, the conduct of perhaps the world's second largest multi-discipline event to be staged in the sub-continent seems to be in safe hands.

At the Bison Division's HQ on Wednesday, some of these plans were unveiled for the media by Major General Anil Chait, Additional Director General (Ops & Admn) Military World Games and GOC, 54 Infantry Division.

In an introductory note, he said some events would be military specific, such as the military pentathlon and required infrastructure suited for them.

The shooting range for instance coming up in the Lake Lines area would have competitions over 300 metres.

Col. Sanjay Khanna detailed the history of the games, while stressing on the objective of the military in promoting peace.

Over 5000 sportspersons from over 100 nations were expected, 71 countries having already confirmed participation for the October 14 to 21 championships. Three earlier editions of the games were held at Rome in 1995, Zagreb (1999) and Catania (Italy, 2003) and the Hyderabad competition would be the first outside Europe.

The historic Taramati Baradari, now refurbished as a resort, would serve as the `Command Centre' for the Games, housing the Operations, Media and front offices of all the committees.

Brigadier M. Ramesh Babu, Commander, besides overseeing the staging of an impressive field plan and the slide presentations, addressed the vernacular media in Telugu.
