Spirit seized

THRISSUR: Excise officials on Wednesday seized 2,000 litres of spirit from a lorry in Kuthiran, near here. Lorry driver Kurumbupalayam Ramaswamy, 37, and his assistant, Ganapathiyil Subramanian, were arrested in this connection. The Excise team was led by Circle Inspector T. Radhakrishnan. — Staff Reporter

Bus strike

THRISSUR: Private buses running along the Mannuthy route stayed off the road on Wednesday following a strike called by bus workers in protest against an assault on some of them on Monday. — Staff Reporter

SIB launches account for youth

THRISSUR: South Indian Bank(SIB) on Wednesday launched `Youth Plus,' a savings account for youth. Launching the new product, Venu Rajamony, India's Consul General in Dubai, said that focus on youth would give an impetus to Indian economy. The new SB account can be operated on a minimum balance of Rs.1,000. Other features include international credit and ATM-cum-debit cards, facilities for Internet banking, fund transfer and mobile banking, and subscription to SIB Students' Economic Forum. V.A. Joseph, SIB chairman, also spoke.

Provident Fund adalat

Thiruvananthapuram: A Bhavishyanidhi adalat will be conducted for Provident Fund members of Thiruvananthapuram and Pathanamthitta districts at the fund's office at Pattom here from 11 a.m. on June 11. Complaints for consideration at the adalat, along with Provident Fund account number or pension payment order number, should reach the Public Relations Officer, Bhavishyanidhi Bhavan, Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram, before June 1. The Regional Provident Fund Commissioner will hear the complaints. — Special Correspondent

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister for Education M.A. Baby has said that the State Government is making efforts to deliver quality educational content to students through information-technology (IT) networks, along with initiatives to tone up IT infrastructure. THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet decided to appoint six new members to the Public Service Commission on Wednesday. They are K.L. Mohanan Nambiar (Kuttikol, Kasaragod), K.U. Arunan (Eduthuruthy, Thrissur), Ajayakumar Kodoth (Kanhangad, Kasaragod), G. Rajendran Prasad (advocate, Paravur, Kollam), Chavarkode C.N. Prasannan (advocate, Chavarkode, Thiruvananthapuram) and K.C. Joseph (Ramankari, Alappuzha). — Special Correspondent

Legal cell for cases related to evictions

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A legal cell will be formed under the Revenue Department to oversee the conduct of cases related to eviction of encroachers and demolitions in various parts of the State. The Cabinet has authorised Revenue Minister K.P. Rajendran to obtain the services of capable lawyers to argue the cases. Principal Secretary (Revenue) Nivedita P. Haran had recommended that caveats should be filed in various courts requesting the courts to hear the Government before granting stays on evictions and demolitions. — Special Correspondent

Devaswom to discuss Ravi Krishna's letter

THRISSUR: Guruvayur Devaswom Administrator V. Ratheesan on Tuesday said the next meeting of the Devaswom managing committee would discuss the letter it received from Ravi Krishna, son of Union Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi. Mr. Krishna's letter had demanded an investigation into purification rites reportedly held at Guruvayur Sreekrishna Temple after his visit. — Staff Reporter

Sabarimala temple to open on May 26

Thiruvananthapuram: The Sabarimala temple will be opened for the `prathishta' day pujas at 5.30 p.m. on May 26. On prathishta day, which falls on May 27, the sanctum sanctorum will be opened at 5 p.m. and the usual and special pujas will be performed. The `Neyyabhishekam' will be performed on prathishta day. The temple will be closed at 10 p.m. The temple will be opened after that only for the pujas of the Malayalam month of Midhunam at 5.30 p.m. on June 15. — Special Correspondent

Hindu Aikya Vedi protest

Thiruvananthapuram: The Hindu Aikya Vedi has protested against the organising of the swearing-in of the office-bearers of the devaswom boards at the Durbar Hall of the Secretariat. General secretary of the Vedi Kummanam Rajasekharan said in a statement here on Wednesday that it was tantamount to slaughtering the autonomy of the boards. He stated that the swearing-in used to be held before the Devaswom Secretary at the devaswom board offices ever since the Devaswom Act came into force in 1950. — Special Correspondent
