Nagapattinam: Desilting of irrigation channels in the Vennar division area in the Cauvery delta region of Nagapattinam district is in full swing and a total length of nearly 287-km coming under Pandavayar river system will be completed before the release of water from Mettur reservoir for irrigation, said Tenkasi S.Jawahar, Collector, on Wednesday. The Collector who inspected the work of desilting of irrigation channels in several villages in Kilvelur block said that 54 channels would be desilted at a cost of Rs.1.32 crore. He pointed out that nearly 35,000 acres in about 40 villages would be benefited in getting irrigation in Nagapattinam and Kilvelur taluks in Vennar division, besides ensuring drainage facility for about 10,000 acres. Mr. Jawahar said that the Public Works Department had already carried out desilting of irrigation channels for a length of 124 km and the remaining would be completed shortly.
