Forging a balance between culture and modernity

It's a summer camp with a difference at Vivekananda Kendra

HEALTH IS WEALTH: Children undergoing personality development training at Vivekananda Kendra on Wednesday.

BERHAMPUR: Indian culture and heritage can survive in our minds and actions hand-in-hand with modernity. Young school students are learning this at a seven-day residential summer camp organised by the local unit of the Vivekananda Kendra continuing in the city.

Forty-six students from various schools of the city and its periphery are taking part in this camp that would conclude on May 25.

Kishor Chandra Raut of Vivekananda Kendra said their organisation has devised a package of learning through entertainment for the students during this period.

Schedule

The participants start their day at 5 a.m. with prayer, yogasana and pranayam. Then follows the daily cleaning of the premises to make students learns importance of doing one's own work. Through stories related to modern times, essence of Indian culture is provided to students during intellectual sessions. A session of mental games and tricks of memory is the highlight of this camp that also includes tips from Vedic mathematics. Tratak, the yogic technique to increase concentration is practiced in the evening.

To provide wakeful relaxation to the participants they are being taught to use `Yoganidra' during afternoons. Every evening participants take part in a session to recycle waste near them to usable items. The hectic and entertaining day of the young participants ends with `Anandmela' a session of open house extracurricular activities.
