NEW DELHI: Saket MLA Vijay Jolly and Mehrauli Councillor Satinder Chaudhry were on Wednesday arrested under the Delhi Police Act by the Mehrauli police for protesting against demolition of properties by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi in the posh Sainik Farms in South Delhi. During the demolition drive, that began around 11 p.m., four properties were targeted and two of them were extensively damaged by the demolition squad of the MCD. A large number of MCD South Zone and Special Task Force officials had earlier descended on the colony in the morning along with JCB excavators and bulldozers. A large posse of police personnel had accompanied them to the site. Mr Jolly said in all MCD, that is expected to resume its drive on Thursday, would target those 21 properties in Sainik Farms that had been partially demolished by it in 2001 but had come up again. The colony with nearly 5,000 properties is home to about 40,000 people and is spread over the four village areas of Said-ul-Ajab, Khirki, Devli and Neb Sarai.
Action taken report
He said on May 8, the Delhi High Court had asked the MCD to file the action taken report with it on Sainik Farms by July 11 and also directed that the height of walls of properties be restricted to 1.5 metres. "But nowhere had it directed that the properties be demolished. It is also sad that the action has been initiated against the colony -- which is being singled out because it is home to the affluent -- now when the matter of the regularisation of the colony is at an advanced stage."
