Demands action against those preparing voter I-cards for Bangladeshis

NEW DELHI: A delegation of Delhi BJP leaders, led by unit president Harsh Vardhan, met the Chief Election Officer of Delhi on Wednesday to demand strict action against those responsible for preparing voter identity cards for illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators.

The delegation told the official that a sting operation by a news channel had shown the personal assistant of Delhi Congress Legislator Vir Singh Dhiman taking money for preparing the identity cards of the illegal immigrants. As such, the BJP leaders demanded that action be initiated against the corrupt staff and middlemen shown in the operation.

"We will also take up the matter with the Election Commission of India, Speaker of Delhi Assembly, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi and Union Home Ministry as it poses a grave danger,'' said Dr. Vardhan, who was accompanied by party leaders Jagdish Mukhi, Alok Kumar, Sahab Singh Chauhan and Vijender Gupta during the meeting with the Chief Election Officer.

While the official is learnt to have assured an impartial enquiry into the matter, the BJP leaders demanded that the names of the immigrants which have been included in the voter list with the help of forged papers be removed, the identity cards that have already been prepared be cancelled and steps be taken to ensure that the names of illegal persons are not included in the voter lists nor any identity cards prepared for them.

The sting operation was shown in a programme, "Deshdrohi'', on Star News on Monday. It had allegedly exposed a middlemen Prakash Chandra and some employees of the Regional Voter ID Office along with Pappu, an alleged personal assistant of the legislator by showing how they entered into a contract for preparing voter ID cards of 20 illegal Bangladeshis by accepting a bribe of Rs. 7,000.
