DINDIGUL: Community radio must create awareness among people, particularly youth and women, on various issues and act as catalyst for development of rural economy, according to Colonel S.P. Khanna, national consultant, Silicon Valley Corporation Group. Addressing a seminar on the role of community radio in promoting socio-economic development organised by the Peace Industrial School and the Pasumai FM here on Wednesday, he said that the continuous flow of information on latest developments in various fields, including agriculture and other related fields, various Government schemes and rights of women and children, was a must to educate rural people. The service must also meet the requirements and needs of people, enlighten rural women and guide youth to become responsible citizens. Besides, importance of nature and environment should also be taught to rural people to protect forest wealth, he said. In his special address, Pasumai FM coordinator J. Paul Baskar said that the broadcasting time would be extended up to 10 p.m. shortly. Special emphasis would be given for organic farming and medical tips including first aid. Sufficient time in the evening hours would be allocated for passing basic information on child rights, consumer rights, problems faced by migrant labour and various ways of solving them. Experts in these fields and officials concerned would interact with listeners and provide solutions to their problems. Micro business activities, opportunities on self-employment and interaction with women entrepreneurs would also be aired at 8 p.m. Besides, a news bulletin would also be broadcast at 8.30 p.m. every day. Artistes, poets and storywriters could present their creations in the service. Debate time would be an open session to share views and listeners could also discuss various issues in this slot, he added. Over 50 tsunami-affected children from Nagapattinam participated.
