SHIMLA: Over 60 per cent electorate exercised their franchise for the Shimla Municipal Corporation (SMC) elections on Wednesday even as minor skirmishes were reported from some wards. The Congress and the BJP are locked in a close contest in all the wards. According to an election official, over 60 per cent voting was reported form the 25 wards of the town. Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh and his MP wife Pratibha Singh cast their votes in ward 14 in Jakhu hill. Ninety-four candidates, including 23 women, are in the fray. The town has a population of over 1.12 lakh voters. Nearly 150 polling booths were set up for the 25-member Corporation elections. Chamyana ward had the maximum number of 7,303 voters and nine polling booths while Benmore had the lowest number of voters at 2,733. The results would be declared on Friday.
