Hearing in Taj case deferred till June 1

Lucknow: There was no mention of the Governor's sanction being sought by the CBI to prosecute Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, an accused in the Taj Corridor case, before a special court on Wednesday which deferred hearing till June1.

The hearing before the special CBI court was put off after one of the six accused sought more time to file his response to a CBI plea in connection with the case.

Former UP Secretary (Environment) R. K. Sharma sought time to file a rejoinder to the CBI's reply on his intervention application challenging a court order sanctioning prosecution of Ms. Mayawati and others in the case.

More time sought

The court first set June 2 as the date for next hearing but later at the request of CBI counsel, who said officials would not be able to attend the proceedings on that day, preponed it to June1.

Special judge (anti-corruption) Rekha Dixit deferred the matter after Mr. Sharma's counsel said he needed time to file rejoinder on the CBI's reply.

The CBI, which was given time till May 15 for filing the sanction for prosecution of the six accused persons including Ms. Mayawati, did not file the sanction on Wednesday.

The agency had on May 15 moved an adjournment application seeking time to file the same. PTI
