CHENNAI: The first meeting of the newly constituted Tamil Nadu Welfare Board for Disabled Persons was held on Wednesday, with Social Welfare Minister Poongothai Aladi Aruna in the chair. Top on the agenda was discussions on the ways and means of increasing awareness of early detection and identification, government schemes for the welfare of the disabled, improving the quality of special schools and promoting inclusive education. Efforts would have to be made to reframe the current policy of inclusive education to help more children benefit from the programme.
Honest evaluation
The Minister called for an honest evaluation to see whether funds allocated to the disabled under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan were being utilised properly. Last year, Rs.11 crore was allotted, and further funds were due this year, she said. It was essential to keep track of how this money was being spent. Representatives of various disabled groups who were appointed members of the Board participated in the meeting.
