DMDK flays law and order "failure"

Special Correspondent

Vijayakant sees a move to wipe him out politically, economically

CHENNAI: Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam president Vijayakant on Wednesday made a scathing attack on the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government for its "failures," especially on the law and order front.

Addressing reporters after inaugurating his party's new office here, Mr. Vijayakant said despite tall claims by the ruling party that it had fulfilled a majority of the promises it had made during the last Assembly elections, the reality was different.

He alleged that an attempt was being made to wipe him out politically and economically.

He also charged that he was not being allowed to execute welfare schemes for the benefit of his constituency people.

Gesture turned down

The local police had refused to accept traffic barricades donated by him for his constituency.

It was surprising that the police accepted barricades in Chennai a few years ago, when he was not a party leader. When he wanted to supply drinking water through tankers to his constituency people, the local municipality prevented it.

He reiterated that the decision to demolish his "kalyana mandapam" was politically motivated.

The moment he handed over the building they started the demolition operation while they had not even started preliminary works in other places, which were acquired long ago, he said.

"Assurances not fulfilled"

When reporters informed him that he could have raised these issues in the Assembly, he said no purpose would have been served by attending the session, as many assurances made to him by Ministers in the previous session had not been fulfilled.

Rules out alliance

When reporters sought to know whether he would strike an alliance with Sarath Kumar, who was to launch his party soon, Mr. Vijayakant said he was associated with Mr. Sarath Kumar in implementing welfare schemes for indigent actors, but that could not be extended to politics.

Mr. Vijayakant said the party office would function in a makeshift building near the kalyana mandapam.
