Footpath to be restored for public use soon

Action against officials who abetted encroachment: Mayor

KOCHI: The area of footpath recovered on either side of the M.G. Road in the eviction drive would be fully restored for the use of the public as soon as possible, Mayor Mercy Williams has said.

Talking to The Hindu on the sidelines of the eviction drive on Wednesday, Ms. Williams said that efforts in this direction would be taken in coordination with the Public Works Department.

She said the business firms that were affected in the drive also need to be rehabilitated, as the purpose of the drive was not to victimise anyone. She said that arrangements had to be put in place for the smooth operation of the shops.

Regarding the possible action against the officials in the Town Planning Section, including retired officials who had abetted the encroachments, Ms. Williams said that definite action would be taken if the allegations were proved correct.

However, she said that those who encouraged corruption among the officials for selfish ends ought to be blamed as well.

She said the entire drive had the support of the people and had created the impression that the law enforcers were not turning a blind eye towards corruption and illegal practices.

According to Ms. Williams, the ongoing drive had improved the image of the State Government, district administration and the Corporation.
