BANGALORE: Kannada Chalavali Vatal Paksha will launch a "save Bangalore" campaign from June 8 to draw the attention of the Government on the increasing civic problems of the Garden City. Announcing this at a press conference in Bangalore on Wednesday, Kannada Chalavali Vatal Paksha leader and MLA Vatal Nagaraj said the campaign would be taken up in a phased manner. On June 8, a conference would be organised in Bangalore to take stock of the problems being faced by the people of Bangalore city, which is growing rapidly. Several urban development experts, retired vice-chancellors, former mayors and corporators of Bangalore and representatives of various associations had been invited to participate in the conference. Mr. Nagaraj expressed concern that because of rapid growth, Bangalore city was facing serious problems such as pollution, vehicular traffic, drinking water shortage, and inadequate infrastructure as well as drainage facilities. The Government, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, Bangalore Development Authority and other civic agencies had failed to come to terms with the problems gripping the Bangalore city. These civic agencies were not geared up to face the future challenges and a large number of villages were being added to the jurisdiction of BBMP. Hence additional funds should be provided for the infrastructure development of these newly added villages. He cautioned that the Bruhat Bangalore would be divided into a developed and an underdeveloped Bangalore or a city of rich and the poor if steps were not taken to upgrade the infrastructure in the newly added areas. Mr. Nagaraj said there would be more pressure on the city in the future as several nearby taluk centres such as Ramanagaram, Hoskote, Nelamangala and Kanakapura were expected to become part of Bangalore in five years. The proposed conference would analyse the different dimensions of these problems and adopt resolutions on the ways and means of tackling them, he said. He alleged that the civic agencies as well as the Government had failed to adopt a systematic approach to tackle these civic issues. He stressed the need for a methodical approach to solve the civic problems of Bangalore. He demanded that elections to the BBMP should be held at the earliest.
