2 soldiers receive accident victim's organs

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The kidneys and liver of an accident victim were successfully retrieved and transplanted on Thursday to two soldiers at the Army Hospital here and the wife of a naval personnel at the Naval Hospital in Mumbai.

Ramesh Chand (60), father of two serving soldiers, was critically injured in a hit and run accident in Faridabad on Monday last. Despite being operated upon at the Army Hospital, he died on Wednesday. His widow Hemlata wanted to donate his organs, but being an accident case a post-mortem was a legal requirement.

Though post-mortems are generally not carried out at army hospitals, Dr. Khaka Alexander of the Government-owned Safdarjung Hospital performed it to facilitate the speedy retrieval of the organs. A team of doctors worked all through the night and transplanted a liver and kidney on two soldiers. The other kidney was airlifted the same night to Mumbai where it was transplanted on the wife of a serving soldier. All the recipients are doing well.

The entire procedure was carried out under the supervision of Maj. Gen. O.P. Mathew, Brigadier R.P. Choubey and Col. A.K. Seth of the Army Hospital. This is the fourth case of organ transplant in the Army Hospital.
