Letters to the Editor
It was heartening to read about the perseverance of Kalavati Bandurkar in the midst of tragedy and misfortune ("Farming it's what they do," May 24). How clumsy our welfare systems are that keep out the needy! The hard work put in by Kalavati and her family is amazing. It is a shame that there are hardly any support systems in place for women like her in our country.
Jeevan Kuruvilla,
The article reminded me of Mahatma Gandhi's words: "Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will."
Dinesh Pradeep Balusamy,
The tale of three farmers, Kamlabai, Lachmamma, and Kalavati and probably thousands like them constitutes the true progress card of the UPA's performance over the last three years. The government is handling the agrarian crisis in a deplorable manner. Its economic policies have added to the miseries of the victims. There is no point in boasting of a high economic growth rate when millions of farmers are struggling to earn even Rs.80 a day.
