A response

The office of the Rural Development Commissioner, Government of Andhra Pradesh, Mrs. A. Santhi Kumari, writes in response to the article "NREGP: no place for single women" (May 22, 2007):

"Out of 52 lakh jobcard women holders, 4,71,094 jobcards were issued to households of single women. Against this 1,92,755 of single women were provided wage employment in 13 districts in Andhra Pradesh. These single women were provided 54 lakh person days wage employment and an amount of Rs.41 crore wages were paid under EGS in Andhra Pradesh.

"No project official will say no to individual single women who are willing to work. The programme will allow 100% women also to work."
