NAMAKKAL: Collector G. Sundaramurthi has appealed to teachers in special schools, which are run for the rescued child labourers under the Indo-U.S. project, to work for the uplift of families of such children. Inaugurating a training programme for the special schoolteachers here on Wednesday, the Collector said that efforts were being made to abolish the menace of child labour in the district. Persons who employed children below the age of 14 years would be sentenced up to 3 years of imprisonment. A maximum amount of Rs. 20,000 would be imposed as fine, he said. Information about government welfare schemes should be spread among the families of children who were rescued from the clutches of child labour. Teachers should guide the parents to get assistance under the schemes and improve their socio-economic condition. He said that free house sites were being provided to all eligible beneficiaries in the district. Mahalir Thittam Project Officer Muthumeenal, Deputy Director of Health Sampathkumar, District Social Welfare Officer Padma Kumareshwari and Indus Project Officer Kalaiselvi were present.
