News Analysis
The last paragraph in a report "Norway denies report on missing passports" ("International", May 23, 2007) was "The air force said its jets pounded a `pre-identified' LTTE training complex in Vavuniya, on Tuesday", which was not related to the rest of the story which was a press statement issued by the Norwegians. The report was filed as a combination of two separate events, related to Sri Lanka. While editing, the second event was introduced as the last paragraph. A report "Dera premises will be vacated by May 27, says SGPC chief" (May 24, 2007) stated that a delegation including Jain cleric Lokesh Prakashm, Father Phillip and Maulana Jamil Ahmed Illyasi is holding discussions with Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh and the Dera management. The Delhi Catholic Archdiocese clarifies that it was not Father Philip but Rev. Fr. Dominic Emmanuel, spokesperson of the Delhi Catholic Archdiocese, who is visiting Sirsa. The third paragraph in a report "Court rejects Swamy's plea against Sonia" (May 19, 2007) was: "Dr. Swamy pointed out that Ms. Gandhi filed the affidavit stating she was educated at Cambridge University, London ... ." It should have been Cambridge, and not London. In a report "Call to boot out colas" (Visakhapatnam, May 23, 2007, page 5), a sentence was: "The pH concentration was so high in these drinks that the people consuming the drinks would be spoiling their health without their notice." "pH concentration" is unscientific: ph is a figure expressing the acidity or alkalinity of a solution on a logarithmic scale on which 7 is neutral. A report "Nakulan dies in Kerala" (Tamil Nadu, May 19, 2007, page 4) stated that Tamil-English writer T. K. Doraiswamy, popularly known as Nakulan, died in Thiruvananthapuram at the age of 84. It also stated that he was born in 1921. It was an error. He was 86 years old; his birth year is right. In The Hindu Crossword 8920, May 23, 2007, clue 5 Down was "Publicity up on the French valleys (7)" but the grid had only five blanks. The compiler clarifies that it was a grid error. In a report "Bangladesh resists Indian victory push" ("Sport", May 22, 2007), the scorecard of the first Bangladesh-India Test had erroneously listed Md. Ashraful as caught by Karthik off V.R.V. Singh. He was caught by Karthik off R.P. Singh. It is the policy of The Hindu to correct significant errors as soon as possible. Please specify the edition (place of publication), date and page.
