Czechs lead Blue Group

DUSSELDORF: The Czech Republic moved to the top of the Blue Group with a 2-1 victory over Belgium at the World Team Cup on Wednesday.

Spain beat Germany 2-1, leaving both teams with 1-1 records. Germany will play the unbeaten Czechs to decide the eventual group leader.

The Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych defeated Olivier Rochus 6-3, 6-0 in the first match and Jan Hajek beat Kristof Vliegen 7-6(7), 6-4 to take an unassailable lead before Belgium won the doubles.

In the Red Group, Chile leads with a 2-0 record followed by the United States and Argentina on 1-1. Sweden has yet to win a match.

The results: Blue group: Czech Republic bt Belgium 2-1 (Tomas Berdych bt Olivier Rochus 6-3, 6-0; Jan Hajek bt Kristof Vliegen 7-6(7), 6-4; Tomas Berdych & Martin Damm lost to Steve Darcis & Olivier Rochus 4-6, 6-3, 7-10).

Spain bt Germany 2-1 (David Ferrer bt Phillip Kohlschreiber 6-3, 7-5; Nicolas Almagro bt Florian Mayer 6-4, 6-4; Nicolas Almagro & Bartolome Salva-Vidal lost to Michael Kohlmann & Alexander Waske 6-7(3), 3-6). — Agencies.
