Recruitment drive

ERODE: Transtaff Solutions, an HR company, will conduct an off campus recruitment drive for SITEL India at Vivekananda College of Engineering for Women, Tiruchengode, on May 26.

A release from the college says it will be for arts, commerce and science graduates of 2007 batch who also have a six-month experience in international call.

Those candidates who meet the requirements may walk in for the interview and also send a copy of the resume to transtaffglobal@ gmail.com.

It adds that there is no registration fee or service charge for the recruitment drive at any stage.

Raw silk

ERODE: Handloom and powerloom weavers requiring raw silk need not look only towards Karnataka any longer because it is available in Erode itself, says a release from the Office of the Regional Joint Director of Sericulture.

It says the Department of Sericulture has initiated steps to sell raw silk produced by local reelers for prevailing

market price.

This is part of the efforts being taken in order to strengthen post-cocoon sector, in which importance is given for establishment of silk production centre.

This is also part of efforts to generate more employment opportunities for youth.

Honoured

ERODE: World Friendship Counsel of India has honoured the Chairman and Secretary of Vivekanandha Educational Institutions, M. Karunanidhi, with Vidhya Rathna award.

A release that was issued by institutions says the award is in recognition of his "remarkable service" rendered towards women's education.

Procession taken out

Nagercoil: Members of Tamil Nadu Fishworkers Union in Kanyakumari district took out a procession and staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Thursday with a charter of demands. The president of the forum, T. Peter Dass led the agitation.

4 held in dowry case

RAMANATHAPURAM: Women police on Thursday arrested four persons of a family on a dowry harassment charge.

Based on a complaint from Libiba Banu (23) here, who was married to Ibrahim (29) of Tiruchi, the police arrested him and three others of his family.

Man arrested

RAMANATHAPURAM: Radhakrishnan (47)was arrested for preventing an official from discharging his duty. When Tahsildar Karunakaran from the flying squad was checking the genuineness of a rice load, he raised objections and threatened him with dire consequences. — Staff Reporter

Liquor destroyed

NAGAPATTINAM: More than 20,000 litres of arrack and 5,000 litres of spirit that were brought from Karaikal to Nagapattinam were seized and destroyed, police have said.

As many as 570 people were arrested in the last six months in various parts of Nagapattinam district during intensive prohibition raids.

The police were keeping a vigil along the coastal areas to check the sale of illicit liquor, sources said.

Local holiday

KARUR: The district administration has declared a local holiday on May 30 in view of Sri Mariamman Temple festival. In lieu of the holiday, June 6 would be a working day, a press release said.

Moderate rainfall in Tiruchi district

TIRUCHI: The district received moderate rainfall in certain places with Nandhiyar Head registering maximum rainfall of 89 mm in the last 24 hours that ended at 8 a.m. on Thursday.

Rainfall (in mm) recorded in other areas are as follows: Pullampadi 53.4, Thuraiyur 52, Thathaingarpet 31, Musiri 29, Marungapuri 27.2, Devimangalam 26.4, Manapparai 22, Samayapuram 17.6 and Kovilpatti 11.3.

Over 7,000 chicken killed

TIRUCHI: A large number of chicken reared in a private poultry farm at Kalingamudayanpatti were killed after the roof and a portion of a compound wall collapsed owing to heavy rain on Wednesday. Around 7,000 birds were killed, sources said.

Mettur level

TIRUCHI: The level in the Mettur dam stood at 74.78 feet against its full level of 120 feet on Thursday. The inflow was 914 cusecs and the discharge, 1,500 cusecs. - Staff Reporter

Anticipatory bail for Jaya TV shareholder

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday granted anticipatory bail to S. Vaigundarajan (51), one of the major shareholders of Jaya TV, in an attempt to murder case registered against him by the Karungal police in Kanyakumari district.

Justice K. Veeraraghavan directed the petitioner to stay in Chennai and report at the Egmore police station thrice a day.

According to Mr. Vaigundarajan, the police had "falsely" implicated him in the case of threatening to kill a group of village women if they did not refrain from bathing in the sea. — Staff Reporter

Tea industry thanks Government for sop

Udhagamandalam: Various sections of the tea industry have thanked the Government for bringing down the tax on tea from four to one per cent. Many of them called on Local Administration Minister M.K. Stalin here on Thursday to express their gratitude. Among them were representatives of the Planters Association of Tamil Nadu,the Tea Traders Association of Coimbatore and the Nilgiri Wynaad Planters Association . Under the aegis of the Young Badagas Association (YBA) a delegation led by the chief of the Badagas R. Ayaroo and president, YBA T.Gundan met Mr. Stalin and conveyed their community's gratitude to the Government.— Special Correspondent

Navy intensifies patrolling

RAMANATHAPURAM: Within hours after the attack of the Sea Tigers of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) on a Naval unit of Sri Lanka at Delft Island in Sri Lankan waters, the Navy has moved its warship towards the north direction of the International Maritime Boundary Line off Rameswaram coast.

Delft Island (Neduntheevu) is the nearest inhabited island from Rameswaram and it is very close to Katchatheevu.

"Though we have no information from the Sri Lankan side about the attack, patrolling has been strengthened in our territory near the place of the reported incident. A ship has been moved towards little north from south. We are closely watching the developments," Commodore Phillip Van Haltren, Naval Officer-In-Charge, Tamil Nadu, told The Hindu on Thursday. — Staff Reporter

AIADMK condoles Tirupur tragedy

CHENNAI: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has condoled the death of 28 persons in an incident of wall collapse in Tirupur on Wednesday night. In a statement issued on Thursday, Jayalalithaa, general secretary, wished the injured a speedy recovery. — Special Correspondent

Man held at airport

CHENNAI: A 37-year-old man from Kerala was arrested at Anna International airport on Wednesday midnight for holding travel documents in the name of a Sri Lankan Tamil. According to airport sources, the arrested person was holding French travel documents issued in the name of one Thulasingam Kandiah. But his original name was Sabari Rajan, hailing from Kerala. Meanwhile, officials at the Kamaraj Domestic terminal seized four rounds of ammunition from a 45-year-old passenger who was bound for Coimbatore on Thursday. — Staff Reporter
