Some visions on display

"DREAM LANDSCAPE": A work by D.P. Sibal

An exhibition of paintings dedicated to the 145th anniversary of well-known Russian artist Mikhail Nesterov is now on at 24 Ferozeshah Road here.

"Holy Surrounding World And Nature Scapes: Indian and Russian Vision" features reproduction of paintings by Nesterov and Indian artist D. P. Sibal.

Organised jointly by the Russian Centre of Science and Culture and Roerichs' Art Club, the exhibition was inaugurated on Wednesday.

Nesterov was born into a family of merchants in 1862 in Russia. In 1874, his parents brought him to Moscow to study in a technical college, where he caught the attention of artist K. Trutovsky. On Trutovsky's recommendation in 1876, he entered the Moscow School of Painting and Sculpture.

In technique, Nesterov's religious pictures are much influenced by modern style.

One of his most lyrical works is the portrait of Olga Nesterova, known as Woman in a Riding Habit (1906), which personifies a typical Russian girl from an upper-middle class family.

The exhibition is on till June 2. -- Madhur Tankha
