TIRUPUR: The death toll in the wall collapse incident at a TASMAC bar in Anupparpalayam Pudur, on the outskirts of Tirupur, rose to 28 on Thursday with one more person, Shanmugasundaram (42), succumbing to injuries at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital. The Anupparpalayam police arrested bar licensee E. Kandasamy (36) of Mannarai. A case was registered against P. Subramaniam, owner of the textile unit, the wall of which collapsed on the bar, on charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Initial investigations revealed that the garment unit owner had raised the height of the compound wall from 10 to 22 feet a year ago to ensure there was no disturbance from the bar. But, the construction was apparently sub-standard and violated safety standards, according to the police. Mr. Kandasamy was also wanted in a case of murder over professional rivalry, police said.A majority of the victims were poor hosiery and construction workers who had migrated to the town from southern districts such as Madurai, Theni, Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar and neighbouring Erode. All 103 TASMAC retail shops in Tirupur remained closed on Thursday. Post-mortem was conducted on 27 bodies at Tirupur General Hospital by midnight on Wednesday. Twenty-one bodies were handed over to relatives by 5 a.m. on Thursday. By noon, all the bodies were handed over to the relatives. Led by Coimbatore Collector Neeraj Mittal, senior police and other department officials mobilised vehicles to move the bodies. While 11 bodies were cremated at the Rotary Electric Crematorium here, others were sent to the native places of the deceased. Ministers Pongalur N. Palanisamy, E.V. Velu and M.P. Saminathan visited the spot and supervised the relief measures at the hospital. Higher Education secretary K. Ganesan, Mr. Mittal and Tirupur MLA C. Govindasamy handed over cheques for Rs. 50,000 each to the kin of victims as solatium.
