Rajkot: Stray incidents marred the 12-hour bandh called by the Congress in Saurashtra and Kutch region on Thursday to protest against alleged police inaction in the May 13 rape and murder case in Junagadh district. The shutdown evoked mixed response in Saurashtra. Sporadic incidents were reported in Rajkot and Bhavnagar districts where police lobbed teargas shells and also resorted to a cane-charge to disperse a mob. At Botad in Bhavnagar district, police lobbed teargas shells and cane-charged a crowd, which set two vehicles on fire and pelted stones. Police took similar action against a stone-pelting mob in Nama Gam area of Rajkot. Hundreds of Congress workers who had come out to enforce the bandh were detained by the police. Members of the Koli community, who supported the bandh, set ablaze the Rajkot Municipal Corporation ward office at Gondal road on Wednesday. The bandh call was given after police failed to nab the two culprits, who had allegedly raped a girl and murdered another after abducting them near Datar shrine in Junagadh on May 13. PTI
