BANGALORE: Under the national urban housing policy, it will be made mandatory to allocate a certain portion of any housing project to people from the economically weaker sections and low-income groups, said Kumari Selja, Minister of State for housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, on Thursday.

Speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of 1,000 houses at Sadar Mangala here under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, Ms. Selja said that under the broad guidelines of the policy, about 10 to 15 per cent of any housing project must be allocated to the economically weaker sections and 25 per cent to low-income groups.

Allotting land for these two groups would be compulsory in housing projects undertaken by both government and private developers, she said. State Governments should formulate specific rules in compliance with the national policy guidelines and ensure private participation, she said.

The Centre had sanctioned 18 projects under the Mission at a total cost of Rs. 1,432.57 crore and 28 projects at a cost of Rs. 413.23 crore under the Urban Infrastructure Development Scheme for Small and Medium Towns and the Integrated Housing and Slum Development Programme for Karnataka. It was up to the State Government and the urban local bodies to ensure quality and timely implementation of projects, she said.

Beneficiaries should be identified for these projects, and for this purpose a committee involving the beneficiaries should be set up, said Ms. Selja.

Minister for Housing D.T. Jayakumar was present.
