Super speciality hospitals for U.P.

Proposals from private sector to be invited

Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh Government on Thursday decided to invite proposals from private sector for setting up seven super speciality hospitals in the State.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the State cabinet chaired by Chief Minister Mayawati, Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh told reporters here.

The hospitals are proposed to be set up in Agra, Jalaun, Bijnore, Lucknow, Azamgarh, Ambedkar Nagar and Saharanpur by private entrepreneurs and will not be Government funded, he said.

Each hospital, involving an expenditure of Rs 140-150 crore, would have 500 beds and it could also have a medical college if the investors so desired, Singh said.

The investors would directly procure the land from farmers and the Government would come into picture only in extreme circumstances where the land has to be acquired in small pieces, he said.

The hospitals would be obligated to provide free treatment to 25 per cent of the patients comprising 10 per cent of SC/ST and 15 per cent from other sections having BPL cards, freedom fighters and ex-MLAs, he said.

To overcome the shortage of 2,450 doctors in government hospitals, primary health centres and community health centres, the Government would soon appoint 1,400 doctors on contract basis, he said adding lab technicians and nurses would also be appointed on contract basis.

The Government has also decided to impose a tax of 12.5 per cent on bidi and 32.5 per cent on other tobacco products, generating an additional revenue of Rs 625 crore, he said. PTI
